An Englishman in New York ââ¬â The Problem Of UK-US English in Freelance Writing An Englishman in New York The Problem Of UK-US English in Freelance Writing An Englishman in New York The Problem Of UK-US English in Freelance Writing By Colin Some people see the differences between American English and British English as a problem. I see them as an interesting challenge. And although the title to this article might indicate that Iââ¬â¢m English, I am in fact, a British Scot. I am also fully aware there is more to the United States of America than the wonderful state of New York, but I felt it made a good title, so I went with it. Why Has This Difference Come About? The English language arrived in the Americas with the advent of British colonization in the early 17th century. As the British Empire grew, so too did the language, which by 1921 had incorporated around a quarter of the worldââ¬â¢s population (approximately 470ââ¬â570 million people). Since that time, the form of English used in the Americas (particularly in the USA) and that used in the UK, have diverged in many subtle ways, leading to the individual dialects now more commonly known as American English and British English, or on Microsoft Word, as US English and UK English. What Are The Differences? The main differences that have developed between the two strains of English include pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, idioms, and date formatting. A few words have even developed completely different meanings, which can mean something in one dialect, but be a source of embarrassment or insult in the other. Some words may not even be used or are unknown to the other. What Is The Impact? As a freelance writer working from home, I am frequently assigned jobs by companies and individuals, more often than not, from the USA. Telecommuting is an area of freelance writing that I enjoy; working with a local Bed and Breakfast on an advertising leaflet one day, and writing a press release for a US-based dot com client the next. Itââ¬â¢s exciting and provides a great way to earn a living. But as this kind of work increases, more often than not I am asked to write articles or essays in the target audienceââ¬â¢s own version of the English language. In most cases, this means adapting my work into US English. Is There A Right One Above All Others? No. Clearly it depends on several factors, such as intended readership or editorial preference. A freelance writer should take guidance from both the publication type and the editor when deciding which to use. Where the issue becomes cloudy is when you have a large company with a global audience, or with a company that has separate websites covering different geographical locations. Iââ¬â¢ve worked with clients in the past that required two separate articles to be submitted for every one assignment, i.e., one copy of an article in US English for their .com website, and the other in UK English for their .co.uk website. Websites such as our very own Daily Writing Tips, has a global readership, yet the difference in language expectation is highlighted where one readership is of greater number than the other. And so an article written naturally in UK English may stand out against the eye of the US English reader. What Then, For The Freelance Writer? Make a judgment call based on the publicationââ¬â¢s intended readership. If there is no information available or itââ¬â¢s too hard to pinpoint, ask the editor. Always remember, though, in the world of freelance writing for the Internet, you wonââ¬â¢t be able to please all the people all of the time. But above all, make sure the content is interesting and topical, because if it isnââ¬â¢t relevant, no one will even read it to spot where the differences are. Sony PS3 Security Breach Sony Online Entertainment (PlayStation Network) is one of the market leaders in providing online games to its users around the world. Many users subscribe to the service to purchase games and online activities. In April 2011, the company faced a major setback regarding their service and data assets. The impact was so massive that they failed to offer their services even after two weeks of the incident. 2.1 Nature of the Attack Sony PlayStation network experienced denial of service attacks from one or more cybercriminals in April, 2011. According to Stuart and Arthur (2011a); the extravagance of the denial-of-service attacks occupied the company to such a great extent that another on-going attack went unnoticed by the authorities, i.e. cybercriminals were also trying to attem pt the intrusion attack around that same time. Later, the company admitted that more than $25 million had also been stolen from an outdated database of 2007 that contained data of similar nature. The massive theft of credit card information and personal information are feared to result in catastrophic instances of identity thefts and other misuse of data for a long period of time. Arthur (2011) provided the information that the data server, that contained information from the year 2007, was known to constitute of records of int ernational users from Austria, Germany and few other countries. Therefore, this attack has not only threatened the image of Sony in the local markets, but also internationally. 2.2 Causes of the Attack Batty (2011) reported the information that an unknown file named ââ¬ËAnonymousââ¬â¢ was found on one of their servers that had a message to warn the authorities about more attacks. This proves that the intruders had successfully gained access of their servers and systems and therefore managed to copy millions of data records for their use. He said to himself that she was too light and childish, too uncultivated and unreasoning, too provincial, to have reflected upon the ostracism or even to have perceived it. Then at other moments he believed that she carried about in her elegant and irresponsible organism a defiant, passionate, perfectly observant consciousness of the impression she produced. (43) The socialites in Daisy Miller's world aspire to a perfection, a nobility, and a superlative of character. But character is a misleading word; interiority is important only insofar as it reflects the assumed depths that come with an appearance of refinement, for the relationships in "Daisy Miller: A Study" are formed by observation, not by conversation. Winterbourne's penetrating gaze dissects and complicates Daisy's appearance and, subsequently, personality, beyond what her own projection of an personality warrants. The narrator of Henry James's story furthers this atmosphere, peppering visual and even abstract sentences with modifiers and other syntactical strokes to force a system of visual refinement on the reader. The reader, however, must engage his imagination to form a picture of Daisy, her most evident quality, while he is kept privy to her relatively blank consciousness, thus ensuring an emotional detachment from her which allows him to "see" her as she really is. The heroi ne captivates Winterbourne, on the other hand, for most of the story, because he can only surmise as to the mystery, or "riddle," as the narrator calls it, of the "ambiguity of Daisy's behavior" beneath her deceptive exterior (46). His recognition of his reliance on the gaze, and on Daisy's vacuity otherwise, triggers his final disgust and enables him to select an answer from the ... ...he right way of regarding Miss Daisy Miller. Can you read my mind Essay
How do you know what you know? Can you figure out how you acquire language when you were still a child? How do you concentrate on reading this paper despite all the stimuli surrounding you? What do you think goes on your mind right now? These are just a few of the questions that cognitive psychology can answer with accuracy. Cognitive psychology is a branch of psychology that deals with how people think, perceive, remember and learn (ââ¬Å"How people learn,â⬠2007). In the past, behavioral scientists explained certain phenomena by simply observing, then measuring and manipulating variables (ââ¬Å"Albert Bandura,â⬠2006). Contrary to behaviorism, cognitive psychology explains the mental processes that take place when a person reacts mentally to various stimuli. These mental processes vary from person to person because each has his own schema of events. Schema, which is a term first used by Jean Piaget in 1926, refers to the set of well-defined concepts which a person already has in mind. These concepts may be ââ¬Å"processedâ⬠through assimilation (ââ¬Å"John Piaget,â⬠2006). For instance, a young child who is exposed only to `fork and spoonââ¬â¢ when eating will not recognize chopsticks as tools for eating as well. If you hand that child a pair of chopsticks, he or she wonââ¬â¢t use it in picking up food to put on his or her mouth. Itââ¬â¢s because that child doesnââ¬â¢t have a concept of chopsticks yet. However, after being exposed to his or her mom using chopsticks, the child will learn that those items can also be used in picking up food to bring to the mouth. That kind of learning is called assimilation which gives way to a new set of schema for the child. Cognitive development among children is just one aspect of cognitive psychology. This branch of learning may also be applied in more recent concerns. For example, teachers and learners are interested in finding out how people process two or more information at the same time. Interestingly, Piolat, Olive, & Kellogg (2005) conducted a study to know how multi-tasked people record notes while they try to comprehend new information from speakers. They found out through their research that ââ¬Å"note taking demands more effort than reading or learning. However, ââ¬Å"it requires less effort than the creative written composition of an original textâ⬠(p. 291). A working knowledge on how people think, perceive and learn is important in making predictions, making adjustments, and formulating policies that could aid the people in their day-to-day mental discourses. In one article, Jaroff (1993) told a story of a girl whose life became troubled after meeting with a psychiatrist who made her believe through ââ¬Å"recoveryâ⬠therapy that she was abused by her own father when she was a young child. Using her knowledge on cognitive psychology, particularly pertaining to how people retrieve memory, she discovered that what she ended up confessing to the psychiatrist was false (ââ¬Å"Lies of the Mindâ⬠). This means that an understanding of this branch of knowledge allows people to be more conscious of how they deal with the world. Cognitive psychology is more than just a branch of knowledge. It is a portal leading to your most used but most strange place in this world ââ¬â that is your mind. You think every day, you learn new things every minute but you forget to understand how all these thoughts are accommodated in your brains, in your minds. In conclusion, cognitive psychology offers explanation to the mental events that take place in a person. These mental activities can explain the past, and the present, to give way to a better future. After all your life depends not exactly on your environment but on how thoughts are processed in your head.

Reflection is part of life. According to a modern idiom in the dictionary once bitten, twice shy; it is the ability to reflect on the actions and reactions that enhance knowledge. Wise men are those who ponder over their actions and make necessary productive changes.
