Compare and contrast Malcolm X, David Walker
I would like to thank my entire group members and Professor Donaldson whose comments and suggestions had been very helpful to improve the quality of this final paper. I have tried for the best of my ability to incorporate in this final version, all their great ideas about the format and the content of the documents. Professor Donaldson suggested ââ¬Å"I am going to suggest that you do a little reorganizing. First of all, you should get rid of all of the headings. Then you should move the biography blurbs to the beginning of each discussion of each respective author. â⬠This idea abstracts Josephââ¬â¢s and Kandiceââ¬â¢s. Following these directions, I have removed all the headings, and the biography blurbs. I also have quoted from the required textbook, and mentioned related page numbers in parentheses. Kandice wanted ââ¬Å"I would organize the paper in a different way and also try and tie the writers and speakers background more into their writingsâ⬠. Copy and Past were the best tools to satisfy that other nice suggestion. Once again thank you; Malcolm Xââ¬â¢s leadership style and his viewpoint about how the Civil Right Movement should be implemented was very similar to David Walkerââ¬â¢s, but greatly conflicted with Booker T Washington whose ideas appealed to a completely different audience. The Civil Right Movement is the Africans- Americans movement that dominated the debates in the United Stated political sphere during the period of (1955-1968). The movement was about the fight against inequality, Americans struggles for social justice, and the racial discriminations. In order to reach their objectives, Africans Americans leaders had displayed many different ideas about how to conduct the movement. Some believed that the movement should be implemented without violence; some thought that the economic freedom was the first to be reached, while others believed that the freedom could not be achieved without confrontation. If the ideas of those bright leaders were saluted by the majority of the Americans people today, it is however noticeable that some of them are still been seen as controversial figures. David Walker was born in Wilmington, North Carolina 1796. His father was a slave man and his mother a free black, so was David Walker because of the existing laws that defined the status of the child based on the mother's. As many of his fellow blacks, a freeman status could not prevent anyone from being an unfortunate witness of the human cruelties. In 1820 he was part of the associate back activists to denounce slavery and discrimination; he also took part of the Freedom's Journal in New York City, and many others forms of social justice fight. In 1830 David was found dead in his home. David Walker had accomplished many works for the Civil Right movement in America to make the United States a better country for all Americans. Among those works, one of the written that had brought so much attention to the public is walker's Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World. In this document, Walker made the true to be heard as it was based on his observation in the United States and around the world. He spoke not only to his brethren, but the white Christian Americans. He reminded the Christians about their values, the history of the Egyptians, and Romans Slaveries. He also reminded them about the history of those slaveries and how they had been destroyed because of their God anger based on the inhuman treatment they used to impose to the slaves whom supposed to be treated with the same human dignity they would want for their families. ââ¬Å"God made man to serve Him alone, and that man should have no other Lord or Lords but Himselfââ¬â that God Almighty is the sole proprietor or master for the Whole human family, and will not on any consideration admit a colleagueâ⬠. (P. 230) His appeal was also for the black asking their sense of capability of rising up and demands what is their civil right: â⬠Oh! y coloured brethren, all over the world, when shall we arise from this death-like apathy? ââ¬âAnd be men!! â⬠ââ¬Å"Are we MEN!! -I ask you, O my brethren! are we MEN? Did our Creator make us to be slaves to dust and ashes like ourselves? Are they not dying worms as well as we? Have they not to make their appearance before the tribunal of Heaven, to answer for the deeds done in the body, as well as we? Have we any other Master but Jesus Christ alone? Is he not their Master as well as ours? -What right then, have we to obey and call any other Master, but Himself? How we could be so submissive to a gang of men, whom we cannot tell whether they are as good as ourselves or not, I never could conceive. However, this is shut up with the Lord, and we cannot precisely tell-but I declare, we judge men by their worksâ⬠(P. 237). Clearly, Walker's strategy encourages the revolt and the civil disorder. Unlike David Walker, Booker Taliaferro Washington was born slave in 1856, from a slave mother and a white father. As many young slaves, he had been exposed very soon to the routines; his early duty was to carry the books of James Burroughs's daughters at Franklin County School. After the Emancipation Proclamation was read in April 1865, his family went to his stepfather's house in Malden, West Virginia. Booker started working at a salt mine and going to school. Few years later, booker got a houseboy position with a wealthy towns-woman, a person who promoted his learning. When he was 16, he used to travel back to Virginia to the new school for black students. He studied at Hampton Institute while working. His admission to Hampton changed his life; he was instructor. In 1881 he founded Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Booker was nationally recognized as the back educator. He was more focused on pushing for black's economic well being and fighting against racisms. He died in 1915. Monday, 21-Aug-2006 In his famous and historical speech of compromise before a majority white audience in Atlanta on September 18th, 1895, Booker T Washington had laid out a strategy for the blacks' economic freedom; Booker urged his fellow blacks Americans to be more focused in their own economic development ââ¬Å"Cast down your bucket where you areââ¬âCast it down in making friends in every manly way of the people of all races by whom we are surrounded. Cast it down in agriculture, mechanics, in commerce, in domestic service, and in the professionsâ⬠. (P. 595) He also spoke about the role the whites Americans would have to play to help them to achieve that goal. ââ¬Å"Cast down your bucket among the eight millions of Negroes whose habits you know whose fidelity and love you have tested in days when to have proved treacherous meant the ruin of your firesides. Cast down your bucket among these people who have, without strikes and labour wars, tilled your fields, cleared your forests, builded your railroads and citiesâ⬠(P. 95) The compromise had reminded the whites Americans to their role and responsibility tower the blacks Americans based on the choice they would have to make. A positive choice would be the whitesââ¬â¢ willingness to promote black education and make them the most intellect and useful citizens; while the wrong choice would simply keep them doing the business as usual, denying the basic right of education to the blacks Americans, keeping them ignorant at the same exposed them as, the threats for the whites. Booker's strategy in this speech appealed to the blacks' economics development in a peaceful environment with the whites Americans. Unlike the two first leaders, Malcolm Little was born free in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19th, 1925. His parents were both blacks Americans; his mother was a homemaker and his father was an outspoken Baptist minister also a strong supporter of Black Nationalism. In 1929 their home was burned, and his father's body was found mutilated after two years. Years later, his mother Louise had the mental issues because of the situation the family went through. Malcolm is graduated from junior high as the top of the class. He did not continue his studies because he was influenced by the negative advise that suggested that his goal of becoming a lawyer was not reachable for a nagger. He worked numerous jobs in Boston before traveling to New York; he was associated to many criminal activities. In 1946 Malcolm was arrested in Boston with burglary charges and sentenced for seven years in prison. Malcolm used his prison term for self studies and taking part in the organized debates. He was influenced by Elijah Muhammad a leader of the Nation of Islam; before he left prison, Malcolm was a strong follower of the Nation of Islam. He changed his last name to ââ¬Å"Xâ⬠as a way to repeal to the slave name while expressing the backs' identity issues. Unlike many of the Civil Right Leaders, Malcolm X is a complex transformational figure in American history. His accomplishments and his different life stories continue to generate heats debates among his supporters and opponents. The transformation from a criminal Malcolm Little, the influential Black Muslim leaders Malcolm X, and his controversial position on the public issues. In April 1964, Malcolm X delivered a speech that defined his position about the direction of the Civil Right Movement. The speech is famously called The Ballot or the Bullet. In that speech, like David Booker, Malcolm spoke about the Negroes revolt; similarly both men were not afraid to die for the cause, and both believed in action. Both of them were ready to take any action against oppression. The Southerners were ready to offer $1,000, against David Walker's heart after his Appeal to Coloured Citizens of the Work. He was found died in his home; it is not clear what killed him. Malcolm X ended up by getting killed. Booker T Washington like Malcolm X was for the blacks' economics development even though the methods were different. Booker would like it peacefully and inclusively in compromise with the white people. Malcolm X would like it exclusively in black communities even if they had to confront the white people whom he accused of the causes of the blacks' struggles. Malcolm X believe ââ¬Å" the Negroes who through their lives have been kicked about, treated like childrenââ¬âNegroes who never have met one white man who didnââ¬â¢t either take something from tem or do something to them. (P. 1871). David Walker, Booker T Washington, and Malcolm X were Africans Americans leaders whom had influenced Americans history through their work in the Civil Right movement. Their belief, theories, and actions in the process of the Civil Right Movement, Malcolm X and David Walker had the same philosophical views that made their voices more appealing to the same group of audience in majorly blacks. Booker T Washington who had philosophical difference with his fellows X and Walker, believed in a peaceful resolution of the matter with a possible cohabitation of all Americans. As his fellow leaders David Walker and Booker T Washington, Malcolm X had a tremendous contribution to the American history, but because of his outspoken position to many issues of public interest, his enemies had portrayed him as a controversial figure, and did not want him to be recognized as a great American leader. He was someone who used to speak fearlessly from the heart about any kinds of issues. The way he used to express his viewpoints was the same to his enemies as well as his to friends and his leaders whom introduced him to Muslim religion. As far as the controversy is concerned, it depends of who you are and on which side of the issues you on. The black people would see David and Malcolm as the voices of those without voices; their outspoken actions against the system were the direct translation of many frustrations among the black communities. Obviously, a white person would see them as dividers and would try hard to expose them as bad guys. Booker T Washington would be seen as a centrist. David Walker and Malcolm X had the same stand point about how to conduct the Civil Right Movement. They both promoted the civil disorders, revolt, unity, and economic improvement between blacks in exclusion with the white Americans. Booker T Washington would prefer the black economic empowerment in compromise and friendship with the whites Americans. He wanted the black people to give up of some claim of the civil right, and the white people to help black to realize their economic development. All of the three leaders, David Walker, Booker T Washington and Malcolm X agreed about black people's education, their economic development, and unity among them. David Walker and Malcolm X believed that the confrontation, revolt and exclusion were the way to go without any compromise. They did not trust the whites Americans' willingness to compromise. They believed that the freedom could not be negotiated, but could be earned by fighting for it. Booker T Washington did not agree with them. He believed that the revolt and exclusion were not the best answers, but the compromise and inclusion. He believed that there was a possibility for both communities to dependently work together in the mutual respect.
The Effects of Anxiety on Language Learning of Esl and Efl University Students
The Effects of Anxiety On Language Learning of ESL and EFL University Students Review of Literature Introduction: There has always been the existence of the feeling of anxiety-anticipation of danger and the fear of some untoward occurrence in the back f our minds. However, in the modern age of stress, cutthroat competition and uncertainty, the problem of anxiety has become chronic and has developed into a menace. This, as every one knows, has posed a strong challenge towards the maintenance of our good health and well-being and onto learning process of learners and even stronger, in ESL and EFL university students for being taught a foreign/second language besides their own ones. For defining anxiety, it can be said that anxiety is an uncomfortable emotional state which has some characteristics like: feeling of apprehension, worry, nervousness, dread, and feeling of stress that may stem from the anticipation of some non-specific source of danger. Rapid heartbeat, dizziness, fainting tendency, trembling, irregularbreathing, sweating, palpitations, hypertension, chest pain and shortness of breath, are common symptoms, all/some of which are observed in persons suffering from anxiety. It may be noted that anxiety may actually prove beneficial in some respects, too. The feeling of anxiety helps cope with the intense situations arising in life. In a way, it helps motivate persons to prepare in the best manner and perform to the utmost in public speaking, at an exam, in working towards meeting some deadline, etc. However,it turns into a malady if it goes beyond a certain limit and even may threaten health. In todayââ¬â¢s world, there is a large amount of reported cases who are suffering from anxiety and it may even reach such enormous proportions in some people, as to interfere with their ability to function normally. Researchers have studied the effects of anxiety on foreign language learning since the 1970ââ¬â¢s; and on second language learning, there are many researches as well. London, R says that: The monumental need of the ESL student is to interact normally both socially and academically in the mainstream classroom . Social and academic anxieties, are the core impediments to adoption and learning. Thus, the teachers need to understand the specific nature of these anxieties by using an affective measurement scale to identify the specific anxiety ââ¬âprovoking scenarios the ESL student experiences. Further more, teachers need to work collaboratively with the student, parents, and each other to set clear performance and behavioral expectations. ESL students need to learn the practical functional nature and practice the functional language needed to participate fully. Finally, structuring self- assessment, as well as classroom activities aimed to maximize an interactive academic experience is essential. Daniels and Hewitt attempted to investigate the effects of different levels of test anxiety on actual rather than simulated classroom test performance. The intent was to learn whether the effect of anxiety would be dependent upon or independent of several variables, such as test scores, sex differences, intelligence, and type of test items. In response to the last, Boor claims that: the Sara son Test Anxiety Scale was administered to students immediately after a course examination and to other students after a regular class period. A significant relationship between test anxiety and examination scores was obtained for the former group and no significant relationship was found when intelligence was partialed out. As Horwitz, Horwitz, and Cope (1991) note, educators should help anxious students cope with existing anxiety-provoking situations and endeavor to make the learning context less stressful. When learners view the classroom as anxiety inducing, they often feel as if they are swimming among sharks and become less socially oriented, less assertive, and more withdrawn or self-conscious than in other situations. Anxiety is often a manifestation of feelings of incompetence. And he says that: where the trigger is concern over being scrutinized, judged and compared to others, the teacher can alleviate anxiety and foster a less confrontational atmosphere by encouraging pair work, group activities and scaffolding for mutual support and reassurance. Young (1991) identifies the following as the main categories and sources of language learning anxiety for general learners. A. anxiety stemming from personal and interpersonal anxieties 1. Low self-esteem 2. Competitiveness 3. Self-perceived low ability levels 4. Communication apprehension 5. Social anxiety 6. Existential anxiety 7. Lack of SL group membership 8. Learner beliefs about language learning B. anxiety stemming from role-related beliefs about language teaching 1. That some intimidation of students is necessary 2. That the instructorââ¬â¢s role is to correct students constantly 3. That the instructor cannot have students working in pairs because the class may get out of control 4. That the instructor should be doing most of the talking and teaching 5. That the instructor is like a drill sergeant C. anxiety stemming from instructor-learner interactions 1. from the instructorââ¬â¢s harsh manner of correcting student errors 2. from studentsââ¬â¢ fear of being incorrect in front of their peers 3. from studentsââ¬â¢ concerns over how mistakes are perceived in the language class D. anxiety stemming from classroom procedures 1. Having student speak in the target language in front of the class 2. Giving frequent oral quizzes, listening comprehension in particular 3. Calling on student to respond orally and exclusively in the SL E. anxiety stemming from aspects of language testing 1. Test formats that evoke more anxiety than others, e. g. , listening comprehension, translation from SL to English 2. Over-studying for hours only to find that the tests assess different material 3. Unfamiliar test tasks Conclusion: Some aspects mentioned in above researches which are proved to be correlated with the level of anxiety are, for example, belief in giftedness and self-efficacy and so on . It is discussed in almost all researches that anxiety may have both facilitative and debilitative effects on language learning of SL/FL learners . However, anxiety seems to be facilitative in some situations of learning especially in second/foreign language learning in a way that it reduces the feeling of being watched or/and being appeared unnatural in reacting inFL/SL learning classes and further in lesson replying in real situations. Because anxiety may have a debilitating effect on the acquisition of the second language, it is important to help learners to cope with and reduce second language anxiety. And for recognition of these effects and cope with them, it seems to be needed a new conclusive study for some forgotten aspects or in other way: for recognizing higher and lower important ones first. After that, researchers should identify the specific items that make the students anxious. The researcher needs to discuss the results with the students and come to conclusions by asking the ESL/EFL student some questions to find the sources of anxiety in the ESL/EFL students. My First Jump – A short Story
The wind was painful against my face, the skin being pulled back from my face, skull emobossed against it. My instructors (Jake and Ryan) were falling with me, to keep me ââ¬Å"safe.â⬠Jake tapped my shoulder, the signal that I should pull my chute. I grabbed the rip cord, and pulled it with all the force I couldâ⬠¦this was a mistake. I had been instructed before to just give it a gentle tugâ⬠¦the cord snapped off. My parachute had failed. This is when the panic kicked in. All the training I had received, gone. My mind drew a complete blank. I was looking around desperately at Jake and Ryan, while the earth was hurtling towards us rapidly. Ryan tilted himself forward, causing his whole body to move forwards in the air, moving towards me. He pulled a cord on my parachute, so as to activate the emergency chute, something which had not been explained to me, as they didnââ¬â¢t see the point, it usually worksâ⬠¦The emergency chute failed. Nothing appeared. This was when my heart was in my throat, no parachute, freefalling, I was dead. At that moment in time, I couldnââ¬â¢t understand why Ryan then decided to grasp on to me, coiling his body around mine, like a koala gripping a tree, until he pulled his cord, deploying his parachute, causing us to fall much slower, all of this happened in an instant. We were, however, still at a dangerous height, the only thing that was keeping me from falling to my death was the grip of Ryan, and the strain could be felt, and the grunts of pain, as he put everything he could in to holding me up. The land site was no longer a priority, it was more landing in general. We were getting closer and closer to the ground, but I could feel myself slippingâ⬠¦I managed to rotate while in mid air, and hold on to Ryan, allowing him to let go of me, and all of the pressure was now on me. At around 10 foot, I lost grip of ryan, and fell to the concrete ground below. This broke my ankle, and sprained my knee, but at this point I was just glad to be aliveâ⬠¦ This experience was really a massive reality check for me, itââ¬â¢s made me realize that not everything goes to plan all the time, no matter how much it needs to. It has also made me really appreciate life, and every moment of it. As they say, ââ¬Å"five minutes of life, is life.â⬠Another experience, which is totally different from this one, but had the same impact on me as a person, is thisâ⬠¦ My vision was blurredâ⬠¦nurses shoutingâ⬠¦something about an ââ¬Å"antidote.â⬠I couldnââ¬â¢t remember anything that had happened. Panic struck me. I had no idea what was going on, and was too weak to express this, but it was obviously serious. What was a ââ¬Å"Chinese Bird Spiderâ⬠â⬠¦? I was on holiday in China, that much I knewâ⬠¦My eyes were getting heavierâ⬠¦ â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ heââ¬â¢s coming aroundâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The sun was shining, dazzling, in my eyes, it was difficult to see, I could however, ask what had happened. I had been bitted by a ââ¬Å"Chinese Bird Spider.â⬠One of the most venemous and dangerous spiders on earth. If my mum hadnââ¬â¢t recognised it instantly, and taken me to the hopsital. I would have died. No doubt. The pain in my neck was definitely present, but dull and numb, it must have only just been in time. This event has also made me really appreciate life, and how amazing it is. I now realise that I took everything I had for granted. Fear, I feel, is the ultimate form, of humanising someone, making them realise what life is truly about, and how to live it.

Grandpa to Me
R Truby 1 Robert T. Truby Instructor Vincent Basso English 101. 064 30 January 2012 Robert H. Truby I have a grandfather named Robert Henry Truby. Before he was born in 1945, two of his uncles were shot and killed. One was named Bill and another was named Sam. In the early 1900s, there was a feud between my family and another up by Bondad, Colorado. A gangster rancher by the name of Ike Cox shot two of his uncles as a result of this family feud. The mother could not bear the chance of losing another son. Right after Samââ¬â¢s death, she decided to move the family and their cattle to New Mexico. My bloodline moved to an unforgiving desert seeking survival. They moved to a remote location called Largo Canyon to raise their cattle and children. The dry summers were hot and the winters were cold. A presence of a prior civilization cultivated the surrounding landscape with Native American culture and evidence. Coyotes and cattle didnââ¬â¢t always get along so Henry, my great grandfat her, trapped coyotes. Coincidently, coyotes were worth more than cattle at the time. A lot of people lost their ranch to the bank or to the government because of tax foreclosures, but not Henry.Henry used his money to buy ranches surrounding his own for a small price. After that the Truby ranch reached sixty-six sections, totaling 42,240 acres. The amount of responsibility with that much land was staggering. For example, guarantying a thousand cows have what they need is like having a thousand babies R Truby 2 making certain they have what they need. To some, raising cattle was harder than raising children. My family was invested in cattle and did what they had to do to get by. Henry had one son named Robert Henry Truby, my grandfather. I call him Papo (Pah-Poe. ) Robert helped his father with the ranch since he could walk.Robert had an overwhelming love and trust towards his father. He left for Las Cruces to attend their university to study Animal Science; however, he would drive o ver eight hundred miles every weekend to help Henry ranch. To Robert, money couldnââ¬â¢t replace moments and time he shared with his father. One semester away from graduating with a degree, Robert learned he had to go back and help ranch. It was never a choice. His family needed him and he was okay setting aside personal goals. An analysis of my grandfather reveals his character; however, there is more to him than meets the eye.Nothing is dearer to my grandfather than family and everybody in this family treasures nothing more than his character. My dadââ¬â¢s attitude towards my grandfather is worth quoting. ââ¬Å"I have never had more respect or trust towards a man. He gave me a foundation to live. He is a sense of home. I know I can always go to him for help. â⬠You could not ask more from a father. My grandmother, Rachael, had her own words to describe my grandpa. ââ¬Å"He is gentle. He is caring and loving. â⬠Robert gave her his word when they got married that he would stay true and for that he will stay forever faithful.Challenges theyââ¬â¢ve faced is a list that defines devotion and care towards one another. Grandma Rachael still gives him backrubs so he must be doing something right. After almost fifty years of marriage, Robert and Rachael have sealed the sanctity of their marriage. My family wouldnââ¬â¢t be a family without him and for that we are forever grateful. R Truby 3 Although Papo resembles a pioneer from an older generation, he still fits into todayââ¬â¢s society in his own way. Iââ¬â¢m about six inches taller than my grandpa right now and he still tells me I might be as tall as him one day.Papo always looks younger with a hat on because it covers up the part of his head thatââ¬â¢s missing hair. It doesnââ¬â¢t matter where heââ¬â¢s at heââ¬â¢ll have on a pair of boots and a pair of wranglers. Heââ¬â¢ll wear a polo shirt that buttons just at the top when he goes to town. When heââ¬â¢s working arou nd the house heââ¬â¢ll wear a shirt that may have everything from paint to sawdust on it. Thatââ¬â¢s my grandfatherââ¬â¢s style and itââ¬â¢s never changed. Papo is stronger than he looks and smarter than he thinks. My grandpa doesnââ¬â¢t drink alcohol or smoke, but he drinks a lot of coke. After all the Coca-Cola heââ¬â¢s had in the past sixty-eight years, Papo is still working out on the farm. It hurts his back, but he still gets out there and does what needs to be done. He values his John Deer tractors. After mastering all the skills of farming, old age seems to take over just a little bit. It is quite humorous to watch Papo drive the tractor because heââ¬â¢s always running over stuff. Itââ¬â¢s not on purpose. His perception is just off a little. He wonââ¬â¢t take the obvious blame, instead heââ¬â¢ll jokingly blame it one someone or something else. He knows that his family wonââ¬â¢t believe him and thatââ¬â¢s what makes it even funnier. My grandpa has his own sense of humor that I find intriguing and different. I may have more respect for my father, but I feel closer to Robert. Weââ¬â¢ve got the same name, but thatââ¬â¢s not the reason. I have a connection with my grandpa that words cannot describe. He is my idol. I look up to him in all things, except when it comes to computers. He is not very good with computers. He holds a lot of feelings back in fear that he will upset someone. In order to find out if Iââ¬â¢ve let him down, I have to know him on a deeper level. This can be quite difficult because he is so subtle and modest. My grandpa wants me to be the best I can be.I canââ¬â¢t tell you R Truby 4 how many times Papo reminded me to go to school and to do my homework so I can get a good job one day. I am his lineage and I am a direct reflection of this man. I am his only grandson. If I found out that I let my grandfather down, it would hurt me and I would beat myself up for it. It is my responsibility to make him proud. That is partly why Iââ¬â¢m here. Even if his words of wisdom may at times become repetitive, I listen and respectfully nod my head. Whatever I do he somehow feels responsible for and he wants me to learn from his past and his mistakes that followed.Sadly my grandpa has to work at an old age without retirement because he has worked for himself his whole life. When he is too old to work anymore he will have to sell the farm. Iââ¬â¢m sure he would like to keep the farm if he could. Heââ¬â¢s guiding me in the right direction to be financially stable and he knows the rest will follow. I will always hear his voice in my head telling me what to do or which decision to make. Iââ¬â¢ll hear him telling me to hang in there when times get tough. I hope I become half the man he is because he is more than my grandfather. He is my hero.

Bloodlines Chapter Twenty-One
MIXING WHAT I NEEDED TO was easy. Getting it to where I needed took a couple of days. I first had to pay attention to what kind of shampoo Laurel used in the PE showers. The school provided shampoo and conditioner, of course, but she wouldn't trust her precious hair with anything so commonplace. Once I knew her brand, I hunted it down at a local beauty supply store and emptied its expensive contents down the drain. I filled bottles with my homemade concoction instead. The next step was switching it with Laurel's own bottle. I recruited Kristin for this. Her locker was next to Laurel's in PE, and she was more than willing to help me out. Part of it was that she shared our dislike of Laurel. But also, ever since I'd saved her from the tattoo reaction, Kristin had made it clear that she was indebted to me and had my back in whatever I needed. I didn't like the idea of her owing me, but her assistance did come in handy. She found a moment when Laurel looked away from her unlocked locker and covertly made the switch. We then simply had to wait for the next time Laurel used the shampoo to see the results of my handiwork. Meanwhile, my other lab experiment wasn't receiving quite the reaction I'd expected. Ms. Terwilliger accepted my report but not the amulet. ââ¬Å"I have no use for it,â⬠she remarked, glancing up from the papers I'd handed her. ââ¬Å"Wellâ⬠¦ I certainly don't either, ma'am.â⬠She set the papers down. ââ¬Å"This is all true? You followed every step precisely? I'd certainly have no way of knowing if you'd, ah, fudged some of the details.â⬠I shook my head. ââ¬Å"Nope. I followed every step.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, then. It looks like you have yourself a fire-making charm.â⬠ââ¬Å"Ma'am,â⬠I said, by way of protest. She grinned. ââ¬Å"What do the directions say? Throw it and recite the last incantation? Do you know it?â⬠ââ¬Ëâ⬠Into flame, into flame,'â⬠I said promptly. After having typed the spell initially for her notes and then re-creating it, it was hard not to have picked it all up. According to the book ââ¬â which was an English translation of a Latin text ââ¬â the language didn't matter so long as the words' meaning was clear. ââ¬Å"Well, there you go. Give it a try one of these days and see what happens. Just don't light any school property on fire. Because that's not safe.â⬠I held up the amulet by the string. ââ¬Å"But this isn't real. This is nonsense. It's a bunch of junk thrown together in a bag.â⬠She shrugged. ââ¬Å"Who are we to question the ancients?â⬠I stared, trying to figure out if she was joking. I'd known she was eccentric from day one, but she'd still always come across as a serious scholar. ââ¬Å"You can't believe that. Magic like thisâ⬠¦ it's not real.â⬠Without thinking, I added, ââ¬Å"Even if it was, ma'am, it's not for humans to mess around with powers like that.â⬠Ms. Terwilliger was silent for several moments. ââ¬Å"You truly believe that?â⬠I fingered the cross around my neck. ââ¬Å"It's how I was raised.â⬠ââ¬Å"Understood. Well, then, you may do what you like with the amulet. Throw it away, donate it, experiment with it. Regardless, this report's what I need for my book. Thank you for putting in the time ââ¬â as always, you've done more than was required.â⬠I put the amulet in my purse when I left, not really sure what to do. It was uselessâ⬠¦ and yet, it had also cost me a lot of time. I was disappointed it wasn't going to have a more meaningful purpose in her research. All that effort gone to waste. The last of my projects showed development the next day, however. In AP Chemistry, Greg Slade and some of his friends scurried into class just as the bell rang. Our teacher gave them a warning look, but they didn't even notice. Slade was preening over his eagle tattoo, baring it for everyone to see. The ink was gleaming silver again. Next to him, one of his friends was also proudly showing off another silver tattoo. It was a pair of stylized crossed daggers, which was only slightly less tacky than the eagle. This was the same friend who had been worrying earlier this week that he wouldn't be able to get a tattoo. Apparently, things had worked out with the supplier. Interesting. Part of holding off on reporting to the Alchemists had been to see if Nevermore would replenish what I'd stolen. ââ¬Å"It's amazing,â⬠Slade's friend said. ââ¬Å"The rush.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know.â⬠Slade gave him a fist bump. ââ¬Å"Just in time for tomorrow.â⬠Trey was watching them, his expression dark. ââ¬Å"What's tomorrow?â⬠I whispered to him. He eyed them contemptuously for a few more moments before turning back to me. ââ¬Å"Do you live under a rock? It's our first home game.â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course,â⬠I said. My high school experience wouldn't be complete without the quintessential football hype. ââ¬Å"A lot of good it'll do me,â⬠he muttered. ââ¬Å"Your bandages are off,â⬠I pointed out. ââ¬Å"Yeah, but Coach is still making me take it easy. Plus, I'm kind of deadweight now.â⬠He nodded toward Slade and his friend. ââ¬Å"How come they don't get in trouble for those? They're not making any effort to hide them. This school has no discipline anymore. We're practically in anarchy.â⬠I smiled. ââ¬Å"Practically.â⬠ââ¬Å"Your brother should be on the team, you know. I've seen him in PE. He could be a star athlete if he bothered trying out for anything.â⬠ââ¬Å"He doesn't like drawing attention to himself,â⬠I explained. ââ¬Å"But he'll probably go watch the game.â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you going to go to the game?â⬠ââ¬Å"Probably not.â⬠Trey arched an eyebrow. ââ¬Å"Hot date?â⬠ââ¬Å"No! But I'm justâ⬠¦ well, not into watching sports. And I feel like I should stay with Jill.â⬠ââ¬Å"You won't even go to cheer me on?â⬠ââ¬Å"You don't need my cheers.â⬠Trey gave me a disappointed look as a response. ââ¬Å"Maybe it's just as well,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Since you really wouldn't get to see me performing to my full level of awesomeness.â⬠ââ¬Å"That is a shame,â⬠I agreed. ââ¬Å"Oh, stop with the sarcasm already.â⬠He sighed. ââ¬Å"My dad's going to be the most upset. There are family expectations.â⬠Well, that was something I could relate to. ââ¬Å"Is he a football player too?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nah, it's less about football itself than keeping yourself in peak physical shape. Excelling. Ready to be called upon in a moment's notice. Being the best on the team's been a way to keep him proud ââ¬â until these tattoos started.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're good without any tattoo help. He should still be proud,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"You don't know my father.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, but I think I know someone just like him.â⬠I smiled. ââ¬Å"You know, maybe I do need to go to a football game after all.â⬠Trey simply smiled back, and class started. The day passed calmly, but Jill ran up to me as soon as I entered the locker room for PE. ââ¬Å"I heard from Lia! She asked if I could come by tonight. She's had regular practices with the other models but thought I could use a special session of my own since I don't have any experience. Of course, the thing is, Iâ⬠¦ you know, need a ride. Do you thinkâ⬠¦ I mean, could youâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Sure,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"It's what I'm here for.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thank you, Sydney!â⬠She threw her arms around me, much to my astonishment. ââ¬Å"I know you don't have any reason to help me after everything I've done, but ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"It's fine, it's fine,â⬠I said, awkwardly patting her on the shoulder. I took a steadying breath. Think of it as Jill hugging me. Not as a vampire hugging me. ââ¬Å"I'm glad to help.â⬠ââ¬Å"Would you two like to be alone?â⬠sneered Laurel, striding in with her entourage. ââ¬Å"I always knew there was something weird about your family.â⬠Jill and I split apart, and she blushed, which only made them laugh more. ââ¬Å"God, I hate them,â⬠she said when they were out of earshot. ââ¬Å"I really want to get them back.â⬠ââ¬Å"Patience,â⬠I murmured. ââ¬Å"They'll get what's coming to them someday.â⬠Eyeing Laurel's locker, I thought that ââ¬Å"somedayâ⬠might come sooner rather than later. Jill shook her head in amazement. ââ¬Å"I don't know how you can be so forgiving, Sydney. Everything just rolls right off of you.â⬠I smiled, wondering what Jill would think if she knew the truth ââ¬â that I wasn't quite as ââ¬Å"forgivingâ⬠as I appeared. And not just when it came to Laurel. If Jill wanted to think of me that way, so be it. Of course, my facade as a kindly, turn-the-other-cheek person was shattered when Laurel's shriek's filled the locker room at the end of class an hour later. It was almost a repeat of the ice incident. Laurel came tearing out of the shower, wrapped in a towel. She ran to the mirror in horror, holding her hair up to it. ââ¬Å"What's wrong?â⬠asked one of her friends. ââ¬Å"Can't you see it?â⬠cried Laurel. ââ¬Å"There's something wrongâ⬠¦ it doesn't feel right. It's oilâ⬠¦ or I don't know!â⬠She took out a blow dryer and dried a section while the rest of us watched with interest. After a few minutes, the long strands were dry, but it was hard to tell. It really was like her hair was coated in oil or grease, like she hadn't washed it in weeks. That normally gleaming, bouncy hair now hung in lank, ugly coils. The color was also off a little. The bright, flaming red now had a sickly yellow hue. ââ¬Å"It smells weird too,â⬠she exclaimed. ââ¬Å"Wash it again,â⬠suggested another friend. Laurel did that, but it wasn't going to help. Even when she figured out that her shampoo was causing the problem, the stuff I'd made wasn't going to come out of her hair easily. Water would continue fueling the reaction, and it was going to take many, many scrubbings before she fixed the problem. Jill gave me astonished look. ââ¬Å"Sydney?â⬠she whispered, a million questions in my name. ââ¬Å"Patience,â⬠I assured her. ââ¬Å"This is just the first act.â⬠That evening, I drove Jill down to Lia DiStefano's boutique. Eddie went with us, of course. Lia was only a few years older than me and nearly a foot shorter. Despite her tiny size, there was something big and forceful about her personality as she confronted us. The shop was filled with elegant gowns and dresses, though she herself was dressed ultra-casual, in ripped jeans and an oversized peasant blouse. She flipped on the closed sign on her door and then confronted us with hands on her hips. ââ¬Å"So, Jillian Melrose,â⬠she began. ââ¬Å"We have less than two weeks to turn you into a model.â⬠Her eyes fell on me. ââ¬Å"And you're going to help.â⬠ââ¬Å"Me?â⬠I exclaimed. ââ¬Å"I'm just the ride.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not if you want your sister to shine in my show.â⬠She stared back up at Jill, the difference in their heights almost comical. ââ¬Å"You have to eat, drink, and breathe modeling if you're going to pull this off. And you have to do it all ââ¬â in these.â⬠With a flourish, Lia grabbed a nearby shoe box and produced a pair of glittery purple shoes with heels that had to be at least five inches high. Jill and I stared. ââ¬Å"Isn't she tall enough already?â⬠I asked at last. Lia snorted and thrust the shoes at Jill. ââ¬Å"These aren't for the show. But once you master these, you'll be ready for anything.â⬠Jill took them gingerly, holding them up to study them. The heels reminded me of the silver stakes Eddie and Rose used to kill Strigoi. If Jill really wanted to be prepared for any situation, she could just keep these around. Self-conscious of our scrutiny, she finally kicked off her brown flats and fastened the many elaborate straps of the purple shoes. Once they were on, she slowly straightened up ââ¬â and nearly fell over. I hastily jumped to catch her. Lia nodded in approval. ââ¬Å"See? This is what I was talking about. Sisterly teamwork. It's up to you to make sure she doesn't fall and break her neck before my show.â⬠Jill shot me a look of panic that I suspect was reflected on my own face. I started to suggest that Eddie be Jill's spotter, but he had discreetly moved off to the side of the shop to watch and seemed to have escaped Lia's notice. Apparently, his protective services had limits. While Jill simply attempted not to topple over, I helped Lia clear space in the store's center. Lia then spent the next hour or so demonstrating how to properly walk for fashion, with emphasis on posture and stride in order to display clothing to its best effect. Most of those fine details were lost on Jill, though, who struggled to simply walk across the room without falling. Grace and beauty weren't concerns as much as staying upright. Nonetheless, when I glanced over at Eddie, he was watching Jill with a rapt look on his face, as though every step she were taking was pure magic. Catching my eye, he immediately resumed his wary, protective guardian face. I did my best to offer Jill words of encouragement ââ¬â and yes, stop her from falling and breaking her neck. Halfway through the session, we heard a knock at the glass door. Lia started to scowl and then recognized the face on the other side of the door. She brightened and went to unlock it. ââ¬Å"Mr. Donahue,â⬠she said, letting Lee in. ââ¬Å"Come to see how your starlet's doing?â⬠Lee smiled, his gray eyes instantly seeking out Jill. Jill met his gaze, grinning just as widely. Lee hadn't been around at the last feeding, and although they talked constantly on the phone and IM, I knew she had been pining to see him. A glance at Eddie's face showed me he wasn't nearly as delighted by Lee's presence. ââ¬Å"I already know how she's doing,â⬠said Lee. ââ¬Å"She's perfect.â⬠Lia snorted. ââ¬Å"I wouldn't go that far.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hey,â⬠I said, inspiration striking me. ââ¬Å"Lee, do you want to be in charge of keeping Jill from breaking her neck? I need to run an errand.â⬠Unsurprisingly, Lee was more than willing, and I knew I didn't need to fear for her safety with Eddie on watch. I left them, hurrying two streets over to Nevermore. Ever since I'd heard Slade and his friends confirm the tattooists were in business again, I'd wanted to pay an in-person trip. Not a covert one, though. My stolen goods had already yielded their evidence. Except for the clear liquid, I had identified all the other substances in the vials. All the metallics were exact matches for Alchemist compounds, meaning these people either had an Alchemist connection or were stealing. Either way, my case got stronger and stronger. I just hoped it'd be enough to redeem me and keep Zoe out of here, particularly since the clock was ticking on her arrival. We were almost a week away from when my father had said she'd be replacing me. My plan was to see how willing Nevermore was to give me a tattoo. I wanted to know what warnings (if any) they gave out and how easy it was in the first place. Adrian's conversation hadn't yielded much info, but probably his on-fire-biker-skelet-on-with-a-parrot tattoo request hadn't done much to help his credibility. I was armed with cash today, which I hoped would get me somewhere. As it was, I never needed to flash any. As soon as I walked in, the guy behind the counter ââ¬â the same one Adrian had spoken to ââ¬â looked relieved. ââ¬Å"Thank God,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Please tell me you have more. These kids are driving me crazy. When we got into thisâ⬠¦ I had no idea it was gonna get this big. The money's good, but Christ. It's crazy to keep up with.â⬠I kept my confusion off of my face, wondering what in the world he was talking about. He was acting as though I was in on his scheme here, which made no sense. But then his eyes flashed to my cheek, and suddenly, I understood. My lily tattoo. It was uncovered, since school was over. And I knew then, with absolute certainty, that whomever he was working with to get his supplies was also an Alchemist. He'd assumed my tattoo made me an ally. ââ¬Å"I don't have anything with me,â⬠I said. His face fell. ââ¬Å"But the demand ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"You lost the other batch,â⬠I said haughtily. ââ¬Å"You let it get stolen right out from underneath you. Do you know how much trouble we go to in order to get that?â⬠ââ¬Å"I already explained that to your friend!â⬠he exclaimed. ââ¬Å"He said he understood. He said he'd taken care of the problem and that we didn't have to worry anymore.â⬠There was a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. ââ¬Å"Yeah, well, he doesn't speak for all of us, and we're not sure we want to continue. You were compromised.â⬠ââ¬Å"We're careful,â⬠he argued. ââ¬Å"That theft wasn't our fault! Now, come on. You have to help us. Didn't he tell you? There's a huge demand for tomorrow because those private school kids have a game. If we can deliver, we'll make double the money.â⬠I gave him my best icy smile. ââ¬Å"We'll discuss it among ourselves and get back to you.â⬠With that, I turned around and began to leave. ââ¬Å"Wait,â⬠he called. I spared him a haughty glance. ââ¬Å"Can you make that person stop calling?â⬠ââ¬Å"What person?â⬠I asked, wondering if he meant some persistent Amberwood student. ââ¬Å"The one with the weird voice who keeps asking if any tall, pale people are showing up around here. Ones that look like vampires. I figured it was someone you knew.â⬠Tall, pale people? I didn't like the sound of that but kept my face blank. ââ¬Å"Sorry. Don't know what you're talking about. Must have been a prank.â⬠I left, making a mental note to investigate that further. If someone was inquiring about people who looked like vampires, that was a problem. It wasn't, however, the immediate problem. My mind raced as I processed what else the tattooist had told me. There was an Alchemist supplying Nevermore. In some ways, that shouldn't be a surprise. How else were they going to get ahold of vampire blood and all the metals necessary for their tattoos? And apparently, this rogue Alchemist had ââ¬Å"taken care of the problemâ⬠that led to the theft of their supplies. When had my father called saying I was being pulled because of Keith's reports? Right after I'd broken into Nevermore. I knew who the rogue Alchemist was. And I knew that I had been ââ¬Å"the problem.â⬠Keith had taken care of me, making moves to get me out of Palm Springs and bring in someone new and inexperienced who wouldn't interfere with his illicit tattoo operation. It was why he'd wanted Zoe in the first place. I was aghast. I didn't have a great opinion of Keith Darnell, not by any means. But never, never had I thought he'd stoop to this level. He was an immoral person, but he'd still been raised with the same principles I had about humans and vampires. For him to abandon those beliefs and expose innocents to the dire side effects of vampire blood for his own material gainâ⬠¦ well, it was more than a betrayal of the Alchemists. It was a betrayal of the whole human race. My hand was on my cell phone, ready to call Stanton. That's all it would take. One call with the kind of news I had, and Alchemists would swoop in on Palm Springs ââ¬â and on Keith. But what if there was no hard evidence to connect Keith? It was possible another Alchemist might go in and play the same game I had, getting the tattooist to think that they were part of Keith's team. Keith was the one I wanted to bust, however. I wanted to ensure that there was no way he could slip out of this. I made my decision, and rather than the Alchemists, I called Adrian. When I arrived back at Lia's shop, I found the training session winding down. Lia was giving Jill some last-minute instructions while Eddie and Lee lingered nearby. Eddie took one look at my face and instantly knew something was wrong. ââ¬Å"What's the matter?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing,â⬠I said blandly. ââ¬Å"Just a problem I'm going to fix soon. Lee, would you mind taking Jill and Eddie back to the school? I have a couple errands I need to run.â⬠Eddie frowned. ââ¬Å"Are you okay? Do you need someone to protect you?â⬠ââ¬Å"I'll have someone.â⬠I reconsidered, seeing as I was about to meet up with Adrian. ââ¬Å"Well, kind of. Anyway, I'm not in trouble. Your job's to keep an eye on Jill, remember? Thanks, Lee,â⬠I added, seeing him nod. A thought suddenly struck me. ââ¬Å"Waitâ⬠¦ I thought this was one of the days you had a night class. Are we keeping youâ⬠¦ orâ⬠¦ well, what days do you have class?â⬠I hadn't thought much about it, only noticing that some days Lee was around and other days he was in Los Angeles. But in looking back, there was no real pattern. I saw realization light Eddie's face as well. ââ¬Å"That's true,â⬠he said, eyeing Lee suspiciously. ââ¬Å"What kind of schedule are you on?â⬠Lee opened his mouth, and I sensed a ready story coming. Then he stopped and cast an anxious look at Jill, who was still talking to Lia. His face fell. ââ¬Å"Please don't tell her,â⬠he whispered. ââ¬Å"Tell her what?â⬠I asked, keeping my voice low as well. ââ¬Å"I'm not in college. I mean ââ¬â I was. But not this semester. I wanted some time off butâ⬠¦ didn't want to disappoint my dad. So, I told him I was just going part-time, which is why I was around more.â⬠ââ¬Å"What do you do in LA during all that time, then?â⬠asked Eddie. That was an excellent question, I realized. ââ¬Å"I still have friends there, and I need to keep my cover.â⬠Lee sighed. ââ¬Å"It's stupid, I know. Please ââ¬â let me be the one to tell her. I wanted so badly to impress her and to prove myself to her. She's wonderful. She just caught me at a bad time.â⬠Eddie and I exchanged glances. ââ¬Å"I won't tell,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"But you really should let her know. I mean, I guess there's no harm doneâ⬠¦ but you shouldn't have that kind of lie between you.â⬠Lee looked miserable. ââ¬Å"I know. Thank you.â⬠When he stepped aside, Eddie shook his head at me. ââ¬Å"I don't like him lying. Not at all.â⬠ââ¬Å"Lee trying to save face is the least weird thing going on here,â⬠I said. I found out then that Jill could walk from one side of the store to the other and back without falling over. It wasn't pretty, but it was a start. She was still a long ways from looking anything like the runway models I saw on TV, but considering she hadn't been able to stand in the shoes at first, I supposed she'd made considerable progress. She started to take off the heels, but Lia stopped her. ââ¬Å"No. I told you. You have to wear these shoes all the time. Practice, practice, practice. Wear them home. Wear them everywhere.â⬠She turned to me. ââ¬Å"And you ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I know. Make sure she doesn't break her neck,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"She's not going to be able to wear those all the time, though. Our school has a dress code.â⬠ââ¬Å"What if they were in a different color?â⬠asked Lia. ââ¬Å"I don't think it's just the color,â⬠Jill said apologetically. ââ¬Å"I think it's the stiletto part. But I promise to wear them outside of class and practice in our room.â⬠That was good enough for Lia, and after a few more words of advice, she sent us on our way. We promised to practice and come back in two days. I told Jill I'd meet up with her later, but I don't know if she heard. She was so caught up in the idea of Lee driving her home that pretty much everything else went past her. I drove over to Clarence's and was met at the door by Adrian. ââ¬Å"Wow,â⬠I said, impressed at his initiative. ââ¬Å"I didn't expect you to be ready so quickly.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm not,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I need you to see something right now.â⬠I frowned. ââ¬Å"Okay.â⬠Adrian led me deeper into the house, beyond where I normally went, which made me nervous. ââ¬Å"Are you sure this can't wait? This thing we've got to do is kind of urgentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"So is this. How did Clarence seem the last time you saw him?â⬠ââ¬Å"Weird.â⬠ââ¬Å"But health-wise?â⬠I thought about it. ââ¬Å"Well, I know he's been tired. But usually he seemed okay.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, well, he's not ââ¬Ëokay' now. It's gone beyond just tired. He's weak, dizzy, and confined to his bed.â⬠We reached a closed wooden door, and Adrian stopped. ââ¬Å"Do you know what caused it?â⬠I asked, alarmed. I'd been worried about the complications of a sick Moroi but hadn't expected to deal with it so soon. ââ¬Å"I have a pretty good idea,â⬠said Adrian, with surprising fierceness. ââ¬Å"Your boy Keith.â⬠ââ¬Å"Stop saying stuff like that. He's not ââ¬Ëmy boy,'â⬠I exclaimed. ââ¬Å"He's ruining my life!â⬠Adrian opened the door, revealing a large, ornate canopied bed. Walking into a Moroi bedroom wasn't something I was comfortable with, but Adrian's commanding look was too powerful. I followed him in and gasped when I saw Clarence lying on the bed. ââ¬Å"Not just yours,â⬠said Adrian, pointing at the old man. Clarence's eyes fluttered at the sound of our voices and then closed again as he shifted into sleep. It wasn't his eyes that held my attention, though. It was the pale, sickly pallor of his skin ââ¬â that, and the bloody wound on Clarence's neck. It was small, made with just one prick, like it had come from a surgical instrument. Adrian looked at me expectantly. ââ¬Å"Well, Sage? Do you have any idea why Keith would be draining Clarence's blood?â⬠I swallowed, scarcely able to believe what I was seeing. Here was the last piece. I knew that Keith had been supplying the tattooists, and now I knew where Keith was getting his ââ¬Å"supplies.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠I said at last, my voice small. ââ¬Å"I have a very good idea.ââ¬

Compare and contrast the character of the state in two Euopean Essay
Compare and contrast the character of the state in two Euopean countries with particular reference to the link between nation and sovereignty from Britain, Fra - Essay Example These premises will help in building towards the relevant theories that link the nation and sovereignty that support the definition of the character and nature of the two states that have been studied in this paper. Political legitimacy was a firm belief that emanated from various political quarters following the French Revolution in this country. Federalism is essentially a concept surrounded by political philosophy in the politics of France. This has special importance as far as sovereignty is concerned within the nation. According to this concept, a nation that follows federalism is one that believes in binding it various people, from diverse corners of the world, together. (Gill, 2003) Federalism is that system which brings people together under the able guidance of a representative who puts forward their issues without an iota of partiality. Under federalism, the nation looks at each of its citizens as equals and as brothers who are bound together geographically as well as in respect of national sentiment. The nation thus follows federalism is one that follows the principles irrespective of age, caste, creed, race, origin or color. The basic nature that has come up in the definition of the state in the case of France is one that adheres to the structuring of an international culture and society for politics that has to do with the building and propagation of new ideals. This has been well administered in France through the use of federalism so as to garner support and ideas from various quarters. (Hirst, 2001) From the concept of federalism have come various other schools of thought, which have culminated into sub concepts in their own right within the state of France and its character. One of these is the concept of dual federalism according to which the best option before any government or nation is to organize itself into separate yet equal branches of government so as to divide the state and national government in various spheres of functioning and significance. This has been used by France in the creation of a well defined state. According to this, the state government may exercise sovereignty within its own boundaries while the national level authorities will be slated to have exclusive and enumerated powers. (Gellner, 2006) Another concept that has branched out from federalism is that of cooperative federalism. According to this school of thought, the best course of action is to establish a strong network of consumer cooperative societies through which cooperative wholesale societies will be formed in order to undertake the purchase of farms and factories. According to federal cooperatives, the proceeds and profits thereof would be paid as dividends to the member cooperatives instead of the workers. This has been a major part of the definition of the nature of the state in France. (Skinner, 2003) Having studied the various aspects of federalism, it would
